Skye takes a month's sabbatical from her job in England, and travels to Washington State's San Juan Islands to heal from a recent failed relationship. She has been dreaming of herself walking on a beach, and knows in her heart she needs to do this. Two-and-a-half years earlier, Skye had joined an organization of snail mail pen pals, and through it had met Michael, a career U. S. Navy man. Michael and Skye fell in love through their correspondence, and he asked her to fly to Seattle in May to spend a month in his company while his ship was based there. His attention seemed too good to be real; and Skye discovered to her dismay and fear that his professed love and charming personality was just a front. In fact, he was sociopathic and abusive, and she considered herself fortunate to have escaped him. For nearly a year, she's concentrated on her business and avoided any men except her business partner John.

Upon first arrival on the islands, Skye encounters her new temporary neighbor, Jedidiah Walker, a scientist with his own environmental company, who had formerly worked for the State Department of Fish and Wildlife. He is studying toxic poisoning of the fish in Puget Sound, and coincidentally investigating the hacking into of his computer files. Mysterious vehicles roam the island at night, leaving little trace of their passing. Walker's laptop computer is electronically fried while he downloads files from his corporate mainframe, and his IT manager suggests he contact the leading corporate security firm in the UK, which happens to be Skye's. Skye and her business partner John deal in classified government contract work involving computer technology.
