| Private Investigator Patrick Fitzcairn has been hired to find out where Annabeth Collinwood and her five identical sisters disappear to every night. Their father has controlled them and held them as practically prisoners in his home since the death of their mother when they were just children. He believes that it will keep them safe but it has dire consequences. This imprisonment has fostered hatred of their father and now the girls have taken to leaving their rooms at night. No one knows how they get out, or where the sisters go. Fitz is the only PI in the area capable of solving these mysteries. He has the magic and the help of a friend named Lily, who also has magic. Mr. Collinwood’s blustering and threats do not endear him to Fitz. This makes Fitz only more determined to help Annabeth free herself not only from her tyrannical father, but also from a sinister force that took control and advantage of her. Fitz cannot afford to fail, for if he did it could mean not only his death, but Annabeth’s as well.
Ms. Jewell takes a classic fairy tale and makes it a perfect story for adults; filled with magic, mayhem, love and hate. This was a very fun romp into another world where magic intermixes with reality and humanity. Annabeth was the only sister who was fleshed out (the others were preoccupied with sprites), and she was shown to be confused and worried, but also strong and capable. Fitz was everything Annabeth needed in her life. He was someone who could, but would not, control her. This was a fun, fast and very enjoyable fairy-tale.
