Hallie Scott, a small town veterinarian, loves all animals except snakes, and dearly loves her job. She doesn't like the disruption to her life when Basil Outlaw, the man she dated in California, comes to town. He's the son of the vet who owns the clinic she works for. Not only that, his rejection of her ended her one chance to have a baby. But he's now pursuing her with the intention of bringing her back with him and says he regrets his earlier decision. They must work together with his father leaves on an extended vacation, giving Basil the opportunity to pursue her. Hallie still loves Basil, but isn't willing to marry him, believing he wouldn't be happy with a barren wife. But Basil has a secret of his own. Will that secret separate them forever, or bring them together?

This is a very well constructed story, with endearing characters involved in interesting situations. Hallie's past disappointment and the reasons she doesn't want to marry are realistic and fit in well with her character and the story. Basil's love for her is complicated by a secret he is unwilling to divulge, but that doesn't mean he's giving up. I would have preferred learning about his brother Cameron's deceased wife nearer the beginning of the book as this caused some confusion. I liked the conflict between Hallie and Basil. The author does a good job with settings and emotions, putting the reader right in the scene. There is also humor in this book, particularly with the snake. I did have some reservations about the woman Basil married, i.e., his secret, and thought the author could have toned it down a bit. All in all, though, I really liked this book. It kept my interest all the way through.

I will look for other books by this author.
