| Cassandra had an awful marriage to her recently deceased husband, and when he dies she can’t say that she’s sorry. She had put up with his orgies along with his insulting and brutal ways for a long time now and is thrilled that she is finally free, until she finds out about what he did to the will. He’s stipulated that she can’t inherit unless she has a child from their union, knowing full well that they had never consummated their marriage. It seems that even beyond the grave he is determined to make her miserable, and while he might have thought he would beat her, she’s decided that she is going to find a way to make this work to her advantage. Now she’s on the hunt for the perfect man to give her a child and then leave her be. She thinks she might have found him in Mark Foxwood.
Mark has been humiliated by a woman that he thought was his one and only. He’s known as a rake of the tallest order in certain circles, but it wasn’t always true. When he found out that the woman he thought he was in love with was using him, he was hurt and angry. He’s decided to swear off the fairer sex for a while until he gets himself straight. When Cassandra offers up her strange proposition, he’s strangely hurt that she would think so little of him but decides that this may be the distraction he is looking for. Unfortunately, when he really gets to know Cassandra he wants more than he thinks she’s willing to give. I thought this was a wonderful historical that had some unusual elements that kept me reading until late at night. I liked the heroine the most; she was plucky and not afraid to go after what she wanted even if it wasn’t politically correct. Usually with a historical it’s the woman that has been deceived by their lover, but in this case it’s the man, which makes it somewhat different for a historical. Mark is understandably bitter and hurt by his betrayal, and not about to try again anytime soon, or so he thinks. A Carnal Agreement is definitely one historical that kept me entertained until the end of the story, and I highly recommend it.
