Monique Burke escaped a fate almost worse than death. I think it a worthy escape. Her sister's wedding to Monique's former boyfriend is today; her boyfriend that is until he met her thinner, younger, blond sister. Now if I thought love was the issue, I probably would not care. But!

So, today, Monique is on her schooner off the coast of Florida enjoying the sun, the water and watching the gulls, knowing family and friends are not happy with her for missing the happy event.

A loud splash pulls her attention from the gulls and the sun to a large fin off the side of her schooner. Something is in trouble. Now here is where I differ from our girl Monique. Being a native of Florida maybe she knows things like this. But a large finned creature in trouble would not have me diving in head first to offer assistance. But Monique did. At first, when she is dragging it on board, it is described as a serpent. As she washes it off it becomes clear it is not a serpent. The life saving effort may have been a risk; but it paid off. She met the most wondrous merman. Ethan became a friend to her. And much more. One who was able to see past the less-than-fashionably thin figure of Monique's to the warm, passionate woman everyone else seem to miss.

It is apparent in how Monique acts that she has been taught to see herself as too fat to be attractive. And all through the story, this is backed up with the various self-descriptions when she is talking about to Ethan. And in every description Ethan is perfect, muscular, toned - just perfect. She is amazed to find Ethan satisfied being with her. They meet, enjoy a beautiful day of passion and the author, Megan Hussey, (bless her) leaves open the door for these two to continue to meet.

I liked Monique. In spite of her strong feelings of inferiority, she was brave and compassionate and open to new things. I think spending additional time with Ethan will help her with her issues. I also felt sorry for Ethan. Before he met Monique, he was all alone except for sea creatures. No one to share thoughts with; no one to laugh with; no one to hold when he's sad. Neither one had anyone to love them. It may be that Ethan and Monique were simply made for each other. Maybe our author, Ms Hussey will be able to tell us. This is an enjoyable short story. I recommend it to you and your friends.
