| At a antique store on Pike street with her sister Sara, Aimee bought an old ivory and gold locket to add to her ever expanding collection of antique ivory lockets. She couldn't resist putting it on and soon disappeared from Seattle, Washington 2008 and reappeared in St. Louis, Missouri 1847. She landed at the feet of a man named Jake Marshall. At first, Jake's motives for helping Aimee was purely selfish. He lusted after her. But then he fell in love with her strength and spirit.
Aimee is a character you really grow to love. Through most of the story all she wanted was to get back to her Mom, Dad and sister in 2008. Like a true hard-working American woman in 1847, Aimee endured the challenges of the old-fashion clothes, no modern facilities, poor medical conditions, and the dangers of traveling the Oregon Trail. Jake is the strong cowboy type with the heart of gold. He stood by Aimee through whatever life threw at them and protected her at all costs. The author really brought to life the trials and tribulations of Jake and Aimee's journey west. Even the minor characters were wonderful like, Ardis, a confident homely woman who taught Aimee to cook over an open fire and Mrs.Purdee, a whining shrew with three sweet little girls and a crude mulish man named Booker who always tried to find a way to molest Aimee. Plus all the other people who make up the light and dark sides of the story. The only flaw in the novel, I thought, were a few wide gaps at the end of a few chapters. It jumped a number of days and took me few minutes to catch up with what was happening. Overall the story was a good read.
