Alaina’s father was dying! As he wasted away in Virginia, he begged Alaina, his only daughter, to take him home to Ireland before he died. She agreed and sheer determination kept him alive until they reached their destination. During the journey, Patrick Ryan confessed to his daughter that he and his best friend in life had betrothed their offspring while they were children. It was his wish that she marry Torin O’Brien, the son of his greatest “love”, Maggie, and his best friend, Michael. Alaina was horrified that, not only had he kept the secret of her betrothal from her, he truly expected her to marry this stranger! After an attack on herself of which her daddy was unaware, the last thing Alaina wanted was attention from a manespecially marriage!

Torin took both the Ryan’s to his mother’s home. Maggie was so excited to finally have them in her home; she went to great extremes to take care of Patrick and to love Alaina as her own. Since Alaina’s mother had left them early in her life, Maggie was like the mother she never had! A feeling of ‘family’ had the two women growing closer together as their time lengthened. Maggie was still adamant that Torin should honor his parents’ betrothal to Alaina, but she knew the harder they pushed, the more he would balk! The fast that many years ago he had been accused, although acquitted, of the murder of his girlfriend, Torin had many reasons not to allow this woman to get too close to him. He just could not do any more damage to her than his reputation had already caused!

Meg Allison has written a beautiful love story which will endear the book to your heart! She has presented a plot that makes love seem possible in any circumstance. And, if love is present, anything is possible regardless of the situation. Torin has a past; Alaina has one, too. The fact that Maggie, the widowed mother of Torin, has a connection with Patrick is obvious to anyone. Even though the two never acted on their attraction, reading the book leaves the impression that they might!

I enjoyed this book in its entirety! The surprise ending just makes reading this book that much more fun. You will definitely want to read this for yourself!
