Veterinarian Travis Kellman is running for the school board against his father. His stepmother Alicia wants him to drop out of the race. She claims to have some information that could ruin him, but she is murdered in her own kitchen before she can proceed with the blackmail.

His father is arrested for the crime. Travis, brother Peter and sister Katie are all certain he is innocent.

Georgia is married to Travis’ brother. She was once engaged to Travis, and now she wants him back. Georgia is attacked after finding a clue, but then suffers from partial amnesia and can’t remember what she found. Travis is smitten by the town’s new PE teacher, Jaybee is living with her agoraphobic sister Angel. Both sisters were wronged by the evil Bradley, who is now in town seeking revenge. And then there’s a little boy, scared and confused, who may have witnessed something important.

Travis works hard to unravel the mystery. It’s a tough one. His father’s mistress, the bullying chief of police, and a three-legged dog all play parts in this charming novel of romantic suspense.

Travis is a compassionate and thoroughly likable main character. Jaybee is intelligent and physically strong. They make an engaging couple, each seeking a permanent and solid relationship, concerned about morality and trying to do right.

Secrets of the past and present, issues of child abuse and adultery, and a large dose of compassion and romance make this mystery a winner. Lies, cruelty and parental devotion mingle seamlessly. Chulick’s novel contains both action and sweetness. The resolution is both logical and somewhat unexpected, making for a satisfying read.
