Heidi struggled raising her son Mikey who had Down’s syndrome. She found herself dreaming about a life with Rick, a man she had been e-mailing while he was in Iraq. The problem was two-fold: he was her friend Wendy’s brother and he was married. After her ex-husband walked out on her, Heidi didn’t have much use for menjust her long distance relationship with Rick. When Wendy insisted they come to her family’s Christmas party, she hoped she wouldn’t be faced with Tori, Rick’s wife.

Rick should have already told Heidi he was divorced when he first returned home from Iraq. He had excuses why he hadn’t, but he wasn’t sure she would understand. He had fallen in love with Heidi through the e-mail contacts and wanted to take care of her and Mikey.

Bish did a good job with this fast-paced story about a couple who should have been together but for various reasons were not. The characters faced several emotionally charged situations which endeared them to my heart. The outcome of the book was not immediately known but it was heading for a happily-ever-after. The poignant look at Heidi and how she dealt with life for herself and her son was, at times, heartrending, but hopeful.

These two individuals were believable and it was hard to put the book down. I loved their story. I didn’t want it to end. That does not mean the ending wasn’t good, just that I didn’t want to leave them. I recommend the book as a great read.
