Molly, the executive lawyer in the big city, with her upscale apartment, designer clothes, and rented car, was back home in Smalltown, USA, for an emergency, extended visit. Her sister, Kim, single mom to 3-year-old Sara, had been critically injured in an automobile accident and had no one to help her long-term. Already a day late because of a snow storm which delayed flight schedules, Molly did not expect to encounter Jason, her once almost fiancé whom she had left to pursue her career. He was the next door neighbor who was keeping Sara until Molly could get to her.

Immediately it became obvious that this extended visit was not going to be without its trials! “Uncle” Jason was very attached to Sara, and she to him. The fact that Molly and Jason were going to have to interact with each other was evident, even though neither wanted to go through this heartache again after six years. Kim would be hospitalized for several weeks; in the meantime, Molly and Jason would be required to interact because of Sara’s love for each.

Donna Alward has written an emotionally packed tear jerker which is both predictable and heart wrenching. This is in no way saying that the tale is boring—anything but! This story reinforces how true love can become an obstacle to overcome, especially when either party cannot understand his own responsibility in the failure of the relationship. She shows that, even though attraction is still sizzling, sometimes chemistry is not enough to secure a future together.

Almost a Family is another look at how easy it can be to overlook problems which may be insurmountable to one party of the couple. Ms. Alward does an excellent job of exploring this relationship, as well as the sub-relations of Molly with her sister and niece. The story is sweet and loving and a true winner. I loved this book and highly recommend it to others.
