Rising from childhood poverty to an influential New Orleans' businessman, Ethan Peron is a man who never squanders his pleasures. Following a precise and orderly routine, Ethan always enjoys his drink, then a woman, and then some gambling. That is until the night he decided to intervene to help Patrick Gallagher, who had lost everything to gambling and was in the process of signing over his plantation and his daughter to Julian Leopold. Ethan, aware of cruel behavior that had gotten Leopold banned from most of the brothels in the city, offers to buy Gallagher's plantation and have his brother wed Patrick's daughter, Katie. As Ethan's brother, Alexander, had recently stated he was ready to have a wife and to start a family Ethan believes this is the perfect solution for everyone.

Until Ethan meets Katie Gallagher and finds himself attracted to the outspoken lady. Katie who had been running the small plantation and even working in the fields when needed does not want any husband - let alone an overbearing and demand man like Ethan Peron. So Katie is relieved to learn she is to marry not Ethan but his younger brother. Katie quickly comes to care for Alexander, even though she remains uncomfortable around Ethan. Alexander allows Katie the freedom to continue to run the plantation and true friendship and love develops between them. But not all relationships are as perfect as they may seem and not all love is the same.

A hot and steamy historical romance, this is a book that truly sizzles from all the sexual heat it generates. The relationship between Ethan and Katie and the conflicting emotions they experience are nicely developed. Though the plot focuses more on the characters than the historical setting of New Orleans at the end of the 18th Century, the historical details included in the background add to the richness of the story. The many sex scenes while explicit are well integrated into the plot and atmosphere of the story and truly add to the readers understanding of the characters personalities and relationships. I look forward to more novels by Ms. Dubois.
