| Jacob Freeman is at a crossroads in his life. He just ended a long term abusive relationship and he's in pain from a severe back injury. With a future that looks bleak, he escapes to Puerto Morelos, Mexico. There he basks in the sun and quietly contemplates what he wants to do with the rest of his life. Pakal, an immortal Mayan spirit guide, is also in Mexico to help Jacob find his way to happiness. The one thing Pakal is forbidden to do is fall in love
with his charge. The attraction is strong for both of them, there's no denying that. The end result is not what either expected.
This was a good romance with a interesting plot, blending aspects of the Mayan culture into a paranormal world. I liked the two protagonists well enough although I didn't feel an overwhelming connection between them at first. That changed as I continued to read. The dialogue really drew a picture of Jacob struggling with the outcome of a failed relationship. It seemed real to me. I think the author's ingenuity with the paranormal situations helped in not making this another run of the mill story. There were some surprises and a unexpected twist that changed everything. The secondary characters were also very instrumental in adding intrigue and engaging my interest. All in all, it's a well written story that deserves a sequel. The ending left me wanting more and I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of Jacob and Pakal.
