Police Officer ‘Mel’ Petersen is a cop in small town Rhodes End. As the only female on the force, and unwanted at that, she is relegated to menial tasks much to her aggravation. When a body turns up at the local dump under suspicious circumstances, Mel has had enough. She begins investigating the death against the chauvinistic chiefs order and risks her career. As she continues, the investigation leads to her own back yard and her sexy neighbor Stephan Zoriak. Afraid that he may have committed these horrible crimes during unaccounted for blackouts, Steve agrees to help Mel with her investigation. In the course of the investigation, it becomes clear to them that this isn’t the work of an ordinary killer, but something far more sinister. With the death toll rising, will they be able to stop the killer in time?

Overall, I found this book to be very flawed. The background and foundation of the story were only briefly touched upon. They did not lend a lot of insight into the storyline. Also, there was no interaction with the main villain whatsoever. The story gave no insight as to his purpose or his feelings. The storyline hinted at his next move, but gave no supporting reasoning. In addition the secondary villain was not all that impressive either. A bit more information was given on his character, but the base was weak.

The main characters had the potential to be great characters, but again, the foundation was weak. Not enough insight was given as to their pasts, especially Mel. The storyline made a few references into her past, but left it unresolved. As far as the rest of the character base goes, there was next to no information given on the supporting characters. In reading between the lines, the reader can guess that there is something more to them than meets the eye, but a stronger foundation would have greatly helped. The story did not meet its potential. It felt rushed, but though I did not enjoy this book particularly, I still see potential in the storyline, if properly developed, and plan to keep my eye out for the author’s future works.
