Sheriff Gabriel Theriot’s niece, Angel Baptiste, saw everything when Deputy Deke Doucette was shot in the back while dragging his niece Ashlynn to safety in the swamp. She’d seen hints of it when Deke kissed her minutes after they met, when she first knew he belonged to her. She saw it all in a dream right before it happened. Her dreams didn’t tell her whether she would be grieving or getting married. Rayne whispered to her that Dekon wasn’t strong enough to pull through without encouragement from his Angel. Rayne confirmed to Angel that Deke was her Cajun man that she’d been waiting for all her life. She warned Angel that her true test would come if he lived. Angel would have to fight for him if she wanted to keep him.

While this book is part of a trilogy and the end of the series, it can be read as a stand alone. It is a fascinating story in its own right as well as a terrific end to a great series. All of the usual suspects have returned for the final episode, beside Gabe and Ashlynn, Angel and Deke, there are Ashlynn’s brother, Storm, their father and Deke’s brother, Sheriff Remy Doucette, their mother, Rayne and their great-grand-mere as well as several lesser developed secondary characters such as the deputies from both Sheriff’s Departments and a few neighbors. There is a shocking amount of very lusty sex considering the man involved has only just survived bullet wounds to his spine that very nearly killed him. His very kindly lover volunteered to do all the work or it couldn’t have happened at all, but then he wouldn’t have been Dekon Doucette, would he? There are some very tense and stressful plot twists as well as one final surprise before all is done. More than anything else this is the story of family, which Ms. Massa is so very good at portraying with love, sensitivity, strength and, most of all, being there for each other, come what may. I loved this book and I’m certain you will too. It is classic Massa and it just doesn’t get any better than that.
