Livvie Collins was aboard the ship Elizabeth Rose heading to live with her brother and his family after the death of their father. On the way a storm blew up, smashing the ship into a reef off of Key West. The ship tilted on its side, Livvie and other passengers went into the water.

The ship Florida, a wrecker which rescued stranded ships, was on the scene to rescue the drowning passengers. Once everyone was rescued, the crew salvaged the cargo to take ashore. Livvie was saved by a handsome man named Sam Langhorne. While Livvie waited for word from her brother and a new ship, she got to know Sam.

I liked the story but it started abruptly. I felt like the first few chapters were missing. So it took me a while to get into the story without feeling lost. I did learn a lot about salvaging and wreckers. I was shocked how they treated the black divers. The characters I thought were well developed. Livvie's shipmate, Mrs. locke, was a whiny weak woman who I could picture very easily and kind of despised. Sam was a lady's man with a bitter outlook on women. Olivia (Livvie) was a independent thinker for her time and only wanted a carefree life.
