Eleanor Devlin Barre survived the crash that took her parents, grandparents, and young brother. She'd spent months recovering in the hospital only to be turned over to her aunt and the uncle who controlled them both with threats and abuse. Beaten and raped, she escapes only to end up in the hospital again near death. Jake McKenna is working with the ambulance crew that finds her. Something about the girl calls to him like no one ever has before. They fall in love but the age difference and well intentioned friends help convince them to let go. Can they find one another again and rekindle the feelings neither have forgotten before her uncle comes back to wreak revenge?

Julia Barrett tackles a tough subject with sensitivity. Devlin seems to handle herself with dignity and respect for others. She's also strong willed enough to handle what life gives her no matter how bad or how good. What a contrast she is to Janice, Jakes' ex girlfriend who strikes out to hurt him and others whether or not she has good reason to. There are several other contrasting characters that involve the reader and let us think of what advice we may have given to Jake when he's searching for answers.

Through it all the author builds a storyline that pulls us into the lives of the characters and the scenarios. The suspense builds as we wait to see when or how Devlin's uncle or others may get involved to throw a monkey wrench into their joy when finally reunited. This is a well done tale that blends romance and suspense with the realities of life.
