Native Legends are the most interesting and many times one finds a story that brings all the creative gray matter to the surface and expresses to the reader all that they feel with words.

White Doe, a maiden from the Mountain people tribe, has been chosen to help a young Apache warrior. He is the last of his tribe, one who has escaped the capture of the white soldiers. Mahko remembers his people and how they are lead like a herd by the soldiers, he must find a way to free them even though he is only one. He vows to free them or die trying.

Alone in the woods he feels he is being watched. Yet there is no one there, just a doe. White Doe has been watchng Makho for some time now. Her gift of shape shifting has allowed her to follow him undected. But today Mahko sees the young doe and fresh meat would be a pleasant cahnged from what he had been eating. His arrow is swift and the doe is hit. To his astonishment he finds it's not a doe but a woman, a very desireable woman.

Though White Doe's task was to help Makho pass the pain and anger her own feelings began to take on human thoughts and emotions and her need for him was almost as great as her task. Makho also felt there was more to this woman. True he had been with women before but this one she had such a strong bond to him, nore than he wanted at times and more than he could be without for long.

The idea of the story is based on myth of course yet it works well when placed in a Native American tale. I found at times wishing that more would have been emphasized on Makho's people but then it would tend to drag the plot. I would like to see if indeed Makho's off spring do find a way to live with the white's. Maybe in the next book?
