| Mari is living an assumed life. She used to be Alicia, an undercover agent and Reid's fiance. But the leader of her agency didn't want to lose two agents so he sent them both on separate missions. After being captured on her mission in the Middle East and kept prisoner for eight months, it was best that she go into hiding. Reid was told she was dead, and the plastic surgeon who repaired her broken facial bones made her look like someone else. She's now a lingerie boutique owner in North Carolina, but she still remembers and loves Reid. And she still has nightmares about her imprisonment, but can remember nothing concrete. Her employee pushes her into taking a vacation because she looks tired. Mari decides to go to Mexico to try and exercise Reid from her mind. They'd created loving memories in bungalow 12, and that's the bungalow she ends up staying in.
But Reid needs a vacation, too, and he takes the same course of action as Mari. He's still not over Alicia, the woman he considered his mate. When he wakes up one morning and sees Mari dancing on the beach, he's reminded of Alicia. Reid and Mari keep bumping into each other, and the slowly leads towards romance, with Reid not knowing who Mari really is. But Mari's cover has been blown. The terrorist network that originally captured her has information telling them Alicia is alive and who she is. They fully intend to kill her because she knows too much about their organization. A Perilous Affair was a sweet romantic suspense in the style of a Silhouette Intimate Moments book, or a Harlequin Intrigue. It was not fast-paced until a little after the middle of the book, but when it picked up speed, it didn't stop. There was not a lot of characterization of Reid, as the story was primarily focused on Mari's point of view, but he made a nice hero. I liked the intrigue surrounding what happened to Mari/Alicia, and I wondered during the entire book just how her cover had been blown while in the Middle East. I also anticipated how Reid would find out who Mari was, and just what his reaction, and hers, would be. A Perilous Affair was an enjoyable read that many romantic suspense lovers will likely want to have on their bookshelf.
