| Danny Stark has tried to convince everyone that he did not set fire to a warehouse and accidentally kill a homeless person. His brother Bobby knows that Danny is telling the truth and tries to find the evidence that will set Danny free. During his investigation, Bobby makes one fatal error and now the wrong person knows that he has the evidence that will clear his brother.
Catherine Bennett is a dedicated journalist, stuck tonight with a horrible assignment; she must attending a fancy party doing a society page article. There she is introduced to Peter Lowell, who seems to hate her on sight. She goes outside for some fresh air and is approached by Bobby, who gets shot as he is trying to give her a message to take to Danny's lawyer - the same Peter Lowell whom she has just met. Now, it seems, her life is in danger. She does not know who to trust or how to find the truth. But she promised a dying man that she would give his message to Peter and she has promised herself that she would find out who killed him. Can Cathy and Peter put aside their differences to help save Danny's life? Can they find the evidence that Bobby was willing to die for? Will they themselves survive? This was a great story and wonderful plot line. Although a bit methodical in the beginning, this book really picks up towards the end. A very enjoyable read and wonderfully written. Cathy is strong and dedicated, and Peter is controlled and quietly forceful. I look forward to reading more books from Karen McCullough in the future.
