| Alex {Alexandra} T'Rayn returns to her family stronghold-underground Arcadia-after an absence of seven years, only to find it nearly deserted except for the overlord's soldiers. Witnessing part of the interrogation of her foster brother Justin Galliard, the Arcadians' ruler, by Cerin Tesar she is terrified, and even more so when one of the soldiers, Sebastian, nearly catches her. Tesar had kept Alex captive for some time before her eventual escape from his clutches. Now she thinks to find her way from the fortress into the natural caverns as her only option, especially when she learns that Tesar believes Justin is not the only Arcadian who possesses the key to the Artifact he seeks, but that Alex also knows the key.
Alex will find re-capture, sadistic torture, and unbelievable betrayal to be the order of the day under the rule of Cerin Tesar and his cruelly lustful son Sebastian, second-in-command. Yet her unbreakable spirit will not bow to the tyrants, and though she is bloodied and bent, she won't be broken. Somehow she will survive, and avenge her family. Somehow she must also find a way to recover the magic Artifact from Cerin, because in his grasp it has become a thing of terror. Arcadia is an intriguing story which this reader found absolutely riveting, from the first page on. This story is nearly as fast-paced as riding a rocket, with characters who seem so real as to practically leap from the pages. Strong-minded and strong-willed heroines matched against equally strong-minded male protagonists set up a conflict often unequalled; and the mystery and intrigue, along with the elements of the paranormal, make this story one not to be missed. This reviewer will certainly be looking for more stories from the pen of Tabitha Bradley.
