Savarin is a genetically engineered human called Sudakhan who is feared and hunted by the very people that created her kind, Humans. She thought she’d found peace as a nanny for Herad’s son Komar for the last eight years on a planet that is far away from where she was created. But the Ulinar have some unusual rules…. children are so scarce that families are allowed to fight for them. It’s usually no problem because Herad is more than capable of handling the challenge, but he’s been injured and would stand a good chance of loosing or dying in the fight. There’s no way that Savarin would stand by and let that happen, so she lets him know what she really is, Sudakhan, a species created for protection. She knows Komar is attached to her, but could Herad feel more for her than he’s let on all these years? When the truth of her heritage is revealed, he reacts by shutting her out of his life. Will she ever get back in?

There are only one or two somewhat spicy love scenes; this story is more about Savarin and the two people that she loves. Savarin has had a hard life, and she’s grateful for everything that she has, and doesn’t want to rock the boat. When the crisis occurs, volunteering is the last thing she knows she should do if she wants to survive, but she has no choice. I thought that the relationship between Herad and Savarin moved very fast once the crisis started, after eight years they were both surprised by the intensity of their feelings. Savarin is a great character, strong but needing protection in some ways because of the way she’d been treated in the past. I enjoyed reading Arena; it had a different kind of love story that really tugs at your heartstrings. If you are looking for something a little out of the ordinary, Arena is a first-class book to get.
