| Caught between an oncoming tornado and a band of renegade
Apaches while crossing the desert in Arizona Territory in
1884, the usually fearless Cassidy desperately tries to out
run them both. Urging her beloved horse, Storm, near the
whirling updraft of the largest devilwind she has ever see,
an arrow catches her square in the back. She has only a
moment to curse Jake, the man who sent her on this dangerous
quest with a bag of gold coins to purchase cattle before
falling unconscious into pain and certain death.
As she slowly awakens in a hospital bed, 26 year old Cassandra Howard, or Cassidy as she has been known since her parents where killed in an Apache raid when she was twelve, can’t quite grasp how a white woman in colourful pants could call an Apache dressed in white man’s clothes standing near her bed “Sheriff”. Equally perplexed, Jesse White Feather is trying to figure out how this tiny and defenseless looking woman came to have a fortune in gold and an arrow in her back with his family’s markings on it. As they begin to unravel the mystery of this situation, Jesse finds himself drawn to Cassidy and wants to protect this demure, yet feisty female, despite her initial racism to him. But, the more he opens his heart to her and her chaming ways, the more Cassidy feels she is putting him and others in danger in this modern world and feels she has to leave - forever. Like an arrow to your heart, you are bound to love this book! Janet Quinn is a masterful storyteller and deftly holds you spellbound, so you can’t put this delightful timetravel tale down. The humour and suspense is wonderful as Cassidy takes in the new roles for men and women and the dangers and delights of the 21st century. The interaction between Jesse and Cassidy and the secondary characters is well developed, while the tales of Stan Talltrees, Jesse’s sage old grandfather, allow the magic to be real.
