| In the 5th century A.D. on the Isle of Avalon, the Arthurian Legend is alive and well and most of the characters we know from history and legend are present too. Avalonians are former residents of the planet Perth before its essential destruction by an immensely powerful rogue wizard, Barung, who had subsequently been banished by Merlyn and his cohorts far into the future. Far away along the space-time continuum to trouble no more {at least not for a very long while}. Then Avalon had been created as a refuge from evil, a function of Beyond. Humans find it accessible only by full direct invitation or by finding one of the shifting seven portals.
Merlyn, Nimue, Morgain, and Allad, as full Perthlings, had remained on Avalon, uniting frequently with humans to create a race of magical Halflings. Merlyn has chosen the human Arthur to institute a full breeding program to ensure a race of warriors capable of battling Barung should he return, which Merlyn clearly expects to occur. Morgain, who in concert with Merlyn jointly decided quite some time ago to remain friends and fellow teachers but no longer lovers, finds his arrogance in this respect, as in so many others, just unbearable. Although Avalon's Choice is the third in a series, this reviewer found it readily understandable as a stand-alone novel. However, it is a fascinating story for anyone interested in magick, ancient history of Britain, the Arthurian legend cycle, and well-developed characters who enjoy their sexuality and sexual preferences, and frequently! I highly recommend this novel and its series, and look forward to finding more by this very prolific author, Annie Windsor!
