Elizabeth de la Maigne, Scion, is a millennial-old immortal creature, a Predator. Currently, she has chosen Seattle as the site of her Protectorate, and is enraged as only she can be when a visiting Predator, Vitiate, arrives and stakes out human Prey. She kills the Predator and commands the intended prey, Adam, to silence and forgetfulness, but for the first time in three centuries, Elizabeth encounters a human who refuses to undergo Enthrallment.

Adam is curator of the Science and History Museum in Seattle, but he has never encountered anything comparable to his experiences now. As he sits in a restaurant waiting for a meeting with an important investor who has been unaccountably delayed, he muses over the earlier events when he was attacked by that strange man and then the man was brutally murdered by a very odd female. The investor, when she arrives, appears nearly identical to the avenger in the alley, and Adam assumes his mind is simply making unnecessary comparisons. Elizabeth has in mind a donation of funds to the Museum, which is always in need, and a suitable donation directly to Adam, which he refuses. All she asks in return is to be allowed to examine certain medieval scholarly documents concerning the nature and existence of angels and demons, at her convenience and her chosen length of time.

H. E. McVey weaves a fascinating tale which interweaves events in contemporary Seattle with Egyptian mythology and religion. The reader will definitely be kept on her or his toes, anticipating {and sometimes fearing} what might be lurking just around the next corner! The main characters are quite well-delineated, and this book is recommended to all but the most delicate readers. Caution: the book contains numerous instances of graphic violence and explicit sexuality.
