This is the story of Lady Julianna Bentley and Colin MacKinnon, laird of the MacKinnon Clan of Scotland. Julianna’s mother was murdered by her husband when Julianna was small. He would have also killed Julianna, but she inherited her mother’s fortune and it would revert to her mother’s kin if she died too. All her life she knew her father hated her. When she found letters that her mother had hidden for her, she learned that he wasn’t her father and her mother knew he would kill her. Julianna also learned the secret of her parentage that meant she had to avoid the king at all costs. When Lord Bentley arranged a marriage for Julianna with a violent little man, he intended to murder Julianna on her wedding night and place the blame on her husband. After the execution of the murdering husband, the king would surely grant Julianna’s lands to Lord Bentley.

Julianna ran away rather than submit to marriage. The warrior who came to escort her to Sara and Steven KirkConnell’s keep was the handsome warrior who had kissed her at Sara’s wedding. He wanted to keep her forever and have her bear him many sons. Sara and Steven set about to trick Collin into realizing that he loved Julianna enough to marry her. When Julianna left without a word to go to the king, hoping to save Colin’s life, would Colin ever learn to love her enough, or trust her enough, to believe that she loved him, and rescue her? Would he ever believe the child she carries is his? Once Colin went in search of Julianna and met a man tied to a tree, who said he is Julianna’s husband, would Colin turn his back on her once and for all?
