Shannon Paige, a modern day woman without a care in the world and no one to care for, dreads going back to her past life -- the life she had before New York. When Jon Sutton, a police officer and her ex-boyfriend, called to tell her that her grandmother, May Quinn, was in an accident, Shannon never dreamed she'd go back to Awenasa Island for any other reason than to take care of her grandmother.

Upon arrival, very bad news awaited Shannon. Once she knew the extent of her grandmother's condition, her only thought was that she'd just return to her past life, and no more was she just going to take care of unfinished business, then leave. Soon the comforts of her grandmother's home, the idea of a bed and breakfast, and the fact that Jon shows her how he feels which tugs at her heart until she relents and love takes over. Her life changes when her unheard of brother, Aiden, comes into the picture. Trust, or more of a lack of trust, is the reasoning behind most of her problems.

This story has a nice base for a good narrative. But, the off-putting sense of her worrying distracts from the story, at least until you come to understand Shannon's childhood. The novel is a sweet mainstream contemporary romance, which delves into conflicts, aggression, lack of trust, and menacing family members. Unknown family secrets threaten to tear Shannon apart. With Jon's help, she comes to terms with her past just to go overboard in a suffocating tyranny of rage and mistrust again, which leads you to understand her suspicions.

The novel, from the beginning, moves on quite slowly. There are some rather negative stances and a streamlined mental attitude that gives thought to the story. Technical errors cause the reader to stop in their tracks and there is a different typeset that is surprising, especially near the end of the book.

All in all, the novel is a nice story delving into the life of a troubled young lady.
