| This story begins with Sara almost, but not quite, regretting having had sex with Jared, her brother in-law. (Sara's husband Mike died the year before the story begins.) While she wants to regret it, she finally admits to herself that she loved it! Jared has been in love with his older brother's wife for years. Mike's death throws the whole family into shock. He and Sara get together once a week... to watch movies, get pizza and friendship stuff like that. Sara is ready to try to move on and goes to a bar where Jared basically begins their sexual relationship.
This is a cute story with parts of it being very moving. Sara and Jared live in a small town, everyone loved Mike, and most don't know what to think of Jared (being the younger brother). At this point, I'd like to point out that Jared is only one year younger than Sara. Also, while Sara has gained some weight during the last year, she is not morbidly obese (at least she wasn't described as such). Ms. Hillman never really tells us how Mike crossed, just that he did and so I spent part of the time wondering how old Mike had been and how did he die... I was a bit distracted. Regardless of what I just wrote, Ms. Hillman has given us a sweet story. When Sara decides to jump in and have an actual relationship with Jared, almost everyone in town has something to say about it. The only person who is happy for them is Jared and Mike's mom. Everyone else either says something to either Sara or Jared about Sara being overweight or tells Sara that she should stay away from Jared because he is trouble. The emotions both of them are still experiencing from Mike's death are very real (as were the emotions from Sara being heavy). Ms. Hillman wrote this with great emotion and integrity. This is a good story.
