| Western Kansas 2008: Lila Scott drove her car off the road and behind a dilapidated building. She was trying to escape the murderous man who raped her and left her pregnant. Lila ran into the shack and a ghostly voice told her to open the secret panel and crawl to the end of the tunnel. At the end was a cave and a man named Skeeter Quinter, the year was 1882. After Lila crawled out of the tunnel, it collapsed and there was no way back to 2008. Skeeter promised to take her to his Ma's house and get his brothers to help dig out the tunnel. As the story unfolds Lila and Skeeter fall in love.
The author did a good job with the authenticity of 1882, with the farm house, badlands, and the Indians. The characters had unusual names, Bug, Hog, Kid, and Skeeter. The plot was corny. When Ma Quinter found out Lila was pregnant she hit Skeeter over the head with a frying pan and tied Lila and Skeeter to chairs, then sent for the Preacher. Lila was so obsessed and driven to have her baby with modern facilities, I often lost focus of the main part of the story. I did however like how the author wrapped it up, no lose ends.
