| Baltimore Beauty takes the reader into the world of psychic, Kiri Alexander. For as long as she could remember, Kiri has been an outcast. Her ability to see and communicate with spirits has set her apart from everyone, including her own guardian, Gayle. Then she meets Rachel, a lonely little girl desperately looking for her sister Sally. Unwilling to believe that she might be communicating again with spirits, Kiri researches into the past of Sally and Rachel Clark and the more she uncovers, the more desperate she is to help Rachel’s spirit. Rachel Clark had disappeared in the forest and was later found dead back in 1962 and for some unknown reason there is no mention of Sally Clark in any of the records. Kiri teams up with Detective Logan Mendoza to unravel the mystery of the missing child. As Kiri unlocks more of the mystery, her own life is turned upside down because she is someone other than Kiri Alexander…
Author Sue Thornton does a wonderful job of making Kiri both sympathetic yet strong. Her ability to speak with spirits, see events as they happened just from the energy held in the room, is both incredible and frightening. The story does slow quite a bit in places and the dialogue can be stilted, but the essence of the story and the tension created by the search for Rachel Clark moves the reader along. The supporting characters are believable and a good foil to the sensitive heroine and her skeptical alpha partner, Logan Mendoza. The twists and turns of the novel are surprising and well timed. Baltimore Beauty is a good story to curl up with this winter.
