MAST officer Aiden Hughes is Fae, from the clan of the Salamanders, their symbol fire. His job is part of the Metro Arson Strike Team and investigation is his field. The latest fires determined to be arson have the smell of Fae, and not only Fae but naturally Salamander. Aidan desperately needs to find the member of his clan who has turned criminal and now caused Death to a mortal.

Dr. Leanan Murphy is in charge of one of the buildings that burned down, losing a very special exhibits contents in this fire. Both Aidan and Leanan find a mutual attraction so sharp that each sense the primal urge and need behind it. Their desire feels so right, as if they actually complete the other, when they are together. If something feels so right, is it then not Fated for them to be together, even though one may be Fae and the other mortal?

Leanans bond with her now deceased mother has been very much bound with the magic of Ireland as a young child. The special sight she was blessed with enabled her to see what other mortals would and could not see. Her escape from the rigidity of her fathers, then her fiancs, rule enabled her to grow within her own right, finally, to study and work as she might want, to run her life in such a way that she is able to make her own decisions. Her choice to give up the Rune, even though she doesnt yet know the importance to the Fae, only the sentimental value connected to her mother, is a very special step in the right direction.
