Erik the Terror longs for peace and a family of his own. Being half brother to the king of the Danes, he's obligated to fight as long as his king needs him and does s happily and with honor. But finds he's tired of war, raping, and pillaging. When he dreams of a beautiful woman with pain in her eyes and sorrow in her soul, he knows he's just the man to heal her.

After Merwenna the Saxon is brutally raped by King Alfred, he leaves her and her sick father at Chippenham fortress to die. When the Danes attack Chippenham, Erik finds the woman he has dreamed about. He immediately takes Merwenna under his protection and begins to show her that love can not only heal the heart but the soul as well. But this new found love that Merwenna and Erik share could be very short if King Alfred has anything to say about it. He's determined to possess Merwenna at any cost and destroy any one that gets in his way.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Even though it does have a few somewhat graphic scenes of rape and murder, these scenes didn't overwhelm the story. They were written in such a way that they became a vital part of the story but didn't detract from the overall depth. Erik and Merwenna are two strong characters that fought against every obstacle on their way to find peace, happiness, and true love even when the battle seemed impossible to win. This story would not be for the faint of heart as it's violent at times. Yet for someone, such as myself, who loves a good romance with a touch of violence, suspense, a gorgeous hero, and a strong heroine, this is perfect.
