| Lady Ainsley Delacorte is content to remain in the background of her flamboyant family. She is intensely shy and retiring since the scandalous death of her father and the family’s move to France. When her sister elopes rather than accept an arranged marriage, Ainsley is the last minute substitute. Lord Dunsmore is handsome and seems to genuinely be attracted to her, but his secrets and the lovely Lady Shelby make happiness a very dim prospect.
This is a very interesting tale set in the Regency era. Dunsmore’s family is conspiring to bring Bonaparte back from exile and overthrow the current government and he is single handedly trying to stop them with the help of his brother. His bull headed reluctance to confide in his wife almost costs him and her everything. The characters and setting are so real that it is easy to get sucked into the story. Ainsley is a very sympathetic and brave character who is constantly trying to overcome her paralyzing shyness, with little consistent help from her husband. Dunsmore is so wrapped up in his plots that he almost ruins his marriage. His brother and sister are very good characters, giving him a little humanity. Lady Shelby and Dunsmore’s grandfather make very good villains and the author makes sure we don’t like them. In spite of her shyness Ainsley comes off as very intelligent and witty and she is brave enough to speak up where it counts. The intrigue, suspense and great love scenes make this one a must read for fans of Historical Romance.
