| Older sister Martha is already betrothed to a politician, Herbert Grindell. She's waiting for her wedding day, reminding her younger sister every chance she gets how much better off she'll be. Amy Prentiss is doing all she can to help speed the process along so she can marry handsome Ben Warner.. She's hoping her nightly dreams of him and the five bay leaves sewn onto her pillow whenever she sleeps will help.
This is such a great story of sibling rivalry which Ms. Leone builds just right. If their pillows weren't made of cornhusks I could easily see these two marriageable young women having a pillow fight as they argue about the benefits inherent in their respective choice for a spouse. Martha picks her mate based on his profession. She dreams of a house made of brick with a brick outhouse and servants to do the tasks she hates. She’s sure the wife of a politician will always have the finer things in life. Amy chooses based on looks and her racing pulse whenever she sees Ben. For her his job is just a necessity to make sure they have a living. She seems positive that Ben’s cooper job will give them more security than that of a politician. This is a lot of fun. Without the tri-corn hats, the bundle board, bay leaves and need to ask the father before courting this could be any two sisters in any century. With those things there are probably a lot more smiles as you read!
