The story begins when a minister, Daniel, travels to the Bayou area. During the boat trip he becomes nauseous and a young woman, Mae, feels sorry for him. She's also attracted to him so she keeps him company until they arrive at the Bayou. But Mae doesn't know that he is a minister and it's a shock when she realizes that because it's love at first sight.

The feeling is mutual but Mae doesn't want to destroy Daniel's career so she starts keeping a distance. But one day a storm drives them together, nature forces them to stay in the church for two days and nights. There they can't resist their feelings any more and they make love.

Afterwards Mae tries to leave the Bayou because she thinks Daniel told her that he would abandon the church and chose to live with her. But Daniel stops her at the last moment and asks her to marry him....

It's a beautiful love story. It's the sort of novel that keeps you reading once you start. It becomes so absorbing that you need to force yourself to stop. It's a romantic but dramatic story and it shows how small-minded people can become towards those who've chosen a life of religious service. But as they say, true love....
