When she's tested as a potential donor for the kidney her mother so desperately needs, Kira, a journalist, is shocked to learn that she's not her mother's biological daughter. That leads to many questions. Kira embarks on an investigation that places her in increasing danger and meets Max, a man that arouses feelings in her that she's never felt for anyone before.

Max has worked as his client's lawyer for many years. They have his loyalty for providing him a life and success he would otherwise may not have achieved. But when he meets the intriguing Kira, his loyalty for his client and his growing feelings for Kira become entangled. But he's determined to keep Kira safe after her life is endangered and his client from being hurt when the truth becomes known.

High tension and plenty of twists keep the reader guessing throughout this immensely enjoyable novel. As the plot thickens, Patricia Potter skillfully guides the reader through the many twists and turns to a dramatic and surprising climax. Her great skill kept the pages turning long into the night. The absolute need to know the answers drove me right alongside Kira and Max as they struggled to find out the truth behind the birth of two women born on the same day. Both primary and secondary players are well balanced and beautifully characterized. Behind The Shadows was at times a deeply emotional story, made all the more shocking in some respects as it's so believable. One can easily imagine the 'what if's' in such a situation. This book is a definite keeper and one that I recommend for those who like gripping page-turners that won't let go.
