Max Keeler was a writer, an artist, and the daughter of Joel and Emily Randolph. Joel had adopted her when her single mother had married him, when Max was very young. Most knew her name, but didn't know she was female—Max was “short” for Maxine. A stranger showed up asking for “him” and she knew, instantly, he was her biological father's son—Carlo Vincente. What she didn't understand was why he now showed up when her life was falling apart. Her best friend and writing partner, Tony Martin, was at UCLA for a semester as ‘writer-in-residence.' Then her parents were hit by a drunk driver. She needed Tony badly.

Tony immediately resigned his position and drove straight from California in a few days. He knew he had to get to Max—he loved her and knew she would need someone to hold her. He wanted to be that man. When he got home and found Steve Coheny and another strange-acting actor, he was instantly on guard to assist Max. He knew she needed him to cover her back. Something sinister was going on and he intended to unravel the situation.

This latest offering in the Tabor Heights series has, once again, risen to heights few authors are able to ascend. Most of her characters in this book were ones we've met before; there were aspects new to them, as well as the few recent additions to the book. This book was almost a thriller. There was something mysterious about the happenings.

The book was poignant as Max faced her past, her future, and the present suspicious activities. She had to make some hard decisions about her life and take charge of her being. It was all so realistic—for which Levigne is well known. She grabbed my attention at the first page and never lost it. I didn't want to put the book down.

I highly recommend this book as one of her best. I'm prejudged because this series is one of my favourites. Anyone can read and enjoy this book. Ms. Levigne will become a must-read author, I promise.
