In Kent, England, in 1812, a group of friends decided to go to the circus. It was a choice that would still be upsetting to Bertie more than five years later! Bertie and her twin, Bessie, had looked forward to the upcoming circus for so long; Tyler, their younger brother, and some of his friends, Sean, Simon, Gareth and Harry, wanted to go with them. These 16-year-old twins were polar oppositesBertie was very tall (almost 6’), extremely shy, with long chestnut straight hair; Bessie, the second twin, was very small, with red curls and an outgoing personality. Bessie usually wore men’s clothing and hung out in the barn with the horses; Bertie was a lady who just happened to be curious enough to always be in trouble.

Bertie had been in love with Sean Brett, for as long as she could rememberit didn’t hurt that he was over 6’ tall with long blond hair. He was gorgeous and he was taller than she. However, during this outing, the group pulled a trick on Bertie which left her stunned with Sean and holding on to her pain until more than five years later when she went to London for her coming-out with the ton. She had neither seen nor heard from Sean in this entire time.

I am purposely being very vague about the happenings in Bertie’s life as well as the gypsy’s prediction about her “golden treasure.” You must read this yourself to find out these things. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Ms. Hetty St. James as done a great job of developing her characters and, even though I found the beginning of the book to be a little slow, when I got into the plot, I actually could not quit reading! There are so many diverse personalities tied into the story that I was surprised that it was not hard to keep up with who was whom!

The plot was fresh, and the regency romance is always a welcome read. How Bertie and Bessie managed to correct their oddities, as well as retaining their originalities, makes for a very good read with I recommend wholeheartedly.
