Single mom Keisha Jones has left her abusive husband and really needs her job at Baltimore Charity International. So stabbing her demanding and nasty boss with a letter opener was probably not a good idea. No one liked Lisa, but still.

Keisha didn’t plan this, she just snapped. She doesn’t think she killed Lisa, but she blacked out after leaving the room with Lisa and the murder weapon on the floor. The body was found in a chair. The letter opener, with Keisha’s prints all over it, has not been located.

Desiree is a somewhat mysterious and very glamorous employee of BCI. She has befriended Keisha and helped her gain confidence. Tina and Jada are gossipy office witches, seemingly after every good-looking guy they see. Rayford Molten is the new and hunky exec making moves on Keisha. And Orlando Laban is a handsome figure from her past, now investigating Lisa’s murder.

Blackmail is involved. Keisha has trouble figuring out who to trust and who to confide in. Both Rayford and Orlando, two handsome and successful black men, are pursuing her romantically. This is a heady experience for Keisha, after her unsuccessful marriage to Kent. Her only friend, Desiree, is acting strangely. And she simply can’t go to jail -- what would her ten-year-old daughter do?

The reader knows early on that Orlando is the better man for Keisha. He is attractive, loves to cook, and still laments that Keisha chose his roommate over him ten years ago. Various misunderstandings complicate the romance, as Rayford stakes his claim.

The solution to the crime has definite gaps, motives and plot lines get a little fuzzy. But the story as a whole is engaging, and you can’t help but root for Orlando.
