Gabrielle James was the granddaughter of Pulitzer Prize winning photographer, Missy James. When Gabrielle’s parents were killed, Missy left her life in New Orleans and moved to New York so the young child wouldn’t be uprooted along with the rest of the trauma. When Gabrielle was ready to live on her own, Missy went home to New Orleans. When Missy died, Gabrielle’s fiancé left the night of the wake but made a point of coming back for the reading of the will. He listened carefully to the accounting of the real property and the bulk of the sizable fortune left to Gabrielle. He complained that Missy left a valuable vintage car to her best friend. He drew up papers to sell all her property that same day. He’d been the only thing Missy and Gabi had ever argued about. Missy’d insisted the right man made you feel safe and cherished in his arms. Gabi started laughing and couldn’t stop at a party in New York. She walked out of the party and drove to New Orleans in her Versace evening gown. Instead of staying at the apartment on Bourbon Street, Gabrielle moved into the house on Coliseum that had been in the family for more than fifty years. She ran The James Collection, a small intimate gallery that Missy had opened with her in mind. The first exhibit Gabi hosted, Trey Fairfax gazed into her eyes from across the room and that’s all it took.

Strange things began happening in the house. Secret drawers opened by themselves to reveal exquisite diamond jewelry. Then the cold, invisible body of a man forced himself on her. He held one icy hand over her mouth and put frigid fingers inside her. A voice called her Ellie. She called the Parapsychology Department at the University seeking help. She and Trey were both very surprised to see each other when she opened her door. Trey could tell that she was very frightened and promised to help her. He had her move into his house so he could protect her.

Even through all the really strange things that followed, Trey and Gabrielle continued to get to know each other, falling more deeply in love. I believe this may be the most romantic story I’ve ever read. Trey is so loving and considerate and Gabi brings him such joy that I felt more voyeuristic watching their love grow than I ever have reading about sex. The sex scenes are explicit and so well written that I reread them for pleasure. Their lovemaking is varied but there is always an underlying tenderness and respect that made the scenes unique. There was a time while reading about the very believable ghost story that I felt uncomfortable turning off the light so I had to stay up and keep reading. This is a really great book. I couldn’t recommend it more highly. You’ve got to read BETWEEN DREAMS AND DARKNESS. I know you’re going to love it as much as I did.
