Sally Ann and and John are ghosts. No, I take that back. Even better, they are guardian angels. Sally Ann is guardian for Rick, a man she loved desperately in her life as a human women. Rick liked her a lot, that he didn't love her. Now, Sally Ann is overdoing her guardian job. She really wants to show herself to Rick, but is forbidden to do so. John is also a guardian angel. He is in love with Sally Ann, and he is supposed to keep watch over her. The big guy, as John calls him, is concerned that Sally Ann will step over the boundaries of what she is allowed to do as a guardian angel. It tears John up to see how she feels about Rick.

As the story opens, Rick is fishing, and falls into the river. Sally Ann pulls him out. She wasn't supposed to, because it wasn't his time to die. Sally Ann just can't stand to see him hurt at all. John warns her once again she's doing too much. He also gives her a blue stone to use to call him if she ever needs his help. John knows she is the Chosen One, but not exactly what she's chosen for. Julius, a senior angel, often speaks in riddles about such things.

Rick works at a construction site for Cliff Lakey. They are building a house for Mrs. Rinfield. Mrs. Rinfield is a widow, who always dresses in orange and black. Employees keep quitting because of the ghosts they see in the neighboring cemetery. Mrs. Rinfield wants the house finished by Halloween. She's also a very odd lady, who can see Sally Ann and John. Cliff hires Alex, a beautiful woman to work with them at the site. It doesn't take much for Rick to fall in love with her. Poor Sally Ann is very jealous, but of course, there is nothing she can do about it.

Soon, supernatural creatures in black hooded robes start to bother Sally Ann. Mrs. Rinfield enlists John's aid in the digging up the graveyard to find some money Hank left for her, but doesn't make clear until the end who Hank is. When Alex's little boy begins to have problems that seem like a poltergeist, Rick is the only one able to help. Sally Ann finds out that a jealous little ghost girl is responsible. Xaphan (an evil dark angel) shows up. Alex, in spite of the rape that gave her her child and has left her fearful of men, falls in love with Rick. And then, it really is Rick's time to die...

As events became more and more complicated, I worried that Ms. Marr would not tie all of these wonderful characters, both heavenly and human, together, but she did in a marvelous way. BETWEEN EARTH AND ETERNITY is a delightful book. The characters are well-developed, and it is fascinating to watch them gradually change and learn about real love throughout the course of the book. I highly recommend this book to absolutely anyone. It made me feel good, all warm inside, to read it. Maybe I'm beginning to believe in guardian angels-- not a bad thing at all.
