| Bewitched is the second book in Chey McCray’s Seraphine Chronicles. It is the story of and Elvin warrior, Jalen, and his heartmate Ranelle. It takes place simultaneously as the first book in the series, Forbidden. It can be read before the first without any disruptions in the story line.
Ranelle and her heart-sisters, Tierra and Liana, were kept virtually imprisoned by the evil sorcerer Zanden their entire lives. They can only trust and count on each other. Their souls are good and pure and have gone untouched by the evil in their lives. Zanden wants to use Ranelle and her heart-sisters to help fulfill a prophecy that would grant him power over all the land. Ranelle has secret magical powers, some that only her sisters know of and others that are still a mystery even to her. Jalen is sent to protect Ranelle from Zanden. In the course of his duties, he falls in love with the spirited Ranelle. Protecting her from Zanden is no longer a duty to fill but becomes his mission in life. Jalen and Ranelle are vibrant and strong characters. The imagery used to portray Jalen’s grace and speed is so vivid it seems to be real. Ranelle is a heart-strong woman. She is loyal to those she loves and she is willing to do whatever she can to keep them safe. This is what makes Jalen her perfect counterpart; they each understand loyalty and will do anything to protect their friends, their love and their people. I enjoyed the first book in the series Forbidden, but Bewitched surpassed my expectations. Ms. McCray as a great ability to weave a fanciful world of magic and mystery that seems real. The different cultures (fairies, elves, nordain….) on Dair are very enchanting and so vividly portrayed that I couldn’t help but be drawn into that world. I highly recommend reading Bewitched.
