Tadeusz Hermanowski was cursed by a witch as a young boy in Poland. If not loved by the time he turned thirty-three he would turn into a wolf permanently. His birthday is fast approaching. Victoria has to return to the mansion where she was raised because her cousin Paul lost her to Tadeusz in a game of chance. She's haunted by memories of the night her mother died. Now it looks like her mother's ghost and a wolf may be roaming Blackbirch Manor.

Penelope Marzec has woven a great tale of suspense mixed with a beauty and the beast type romance. It seems like Victoria's life went from bad to worse when she left her home in Pennsylvania for New York City. Her marriage to Giles Billingsford III lacked love and was filled with his jealous rages. Tadeusz is well done as an intelligent, caring man cursed to look like a beast when he has a heart of gold. It seems they both need someone to love them for what they are despite their looks.

For the astute reader the villain's nastiness comes through relatively early in the book. The games he plays to drive Victoria into madness are vicious. Ms. Marzec does a superb job keeping us in suspense about how he carries out his evil plot right up to the end. Ipsy and her husband William are well done secondary characters. Lilly and Stan help add much to the suspense. This book was hard to put down until all the questions were answered.
