Shaun Stevens has been thinking that it might be time for him to find his mate since everyone around him seems to be pairing off. He always figured his mate would be a woman who can hold her own with him in the wilderness. What he never counted on was finding his mate to be a gently raised Southern Belle like Gemmita Jacobs. Gemmita's whole purpose for being in Alaska is to assert her independence and show her father that she can deal with things on her own. Meeting her mate is a shock, especially after getting to know him.

Getting to know both Shaun and Gemmita before they meet each other allows readers a glimpse of their characters before the sparks fly and the bickering starts. It doesn't even take them actually meeting for their mating instincts to kick in, but once they do, things heat up quickly. Though they appear to be complete opposites at first, their interactions throughout the course of the book prove that it's what's beneath their surfaces that really matter. By looking beyond appearances, both Gemmita and Shaun realize that their wolves have chosen exactly the right person for them. Gemmita's strength is the perfect answer to Shaun's and their ability to work together only enhances their instinctual attraction to each other.

Even with Shaun and Gemmita being the focus of the story, there are a number of great characters that help make this an enjoyable read. Evan, the Alpha of the Takhini pack, is a funny and sarcastic character, exactly the type of leader the pack needs. He plays an important role in the story and it will be interesting to watch him develop over the course of the series. Vivian Arend does a wonderful job of building the atmosphere and the other characters in this story so that readers will be sucked into the world and looking forward to the rest of the books in the series.
