Cooper Sullivan and Lil Chance became childhood friends and later sweethearts when Cooper spent the summers at his grandparent's home in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Together they spent summers exploring and leaning to love the great outdoors. On Cooper's last summer with Lil before Cooper left to pursue his life in New York, they also discovered a murdered hiker on those trails they loved and twelve years later the woman's death is still a mystery. But things are happening around the Black Hills that indicate to Cooper, a former New York cop who has returned home to care for his grandparent's and their horse farm that the killer is still at work.

In typical Nora Robert's style, readers of Black Hills soon find themselves enthralled in a story with character's who feel like friends and family! You will laugh and cry; your heart will race with fear or sing with joy right along with the characters in this story. And although I have never physically been to South Dakota or a wild life refuge like the one described in this story, by the end of this book I felt like I had been.

Cooper and Lil have the kind of love that we all want to find in our lifetime but because they found it so young, other things get in the way and drive them apart. Even as I cried, I thought Cooper showed depth and maturity because he didn't take Lil away from her life goals and passions while he sought his own dreams. Now after twelve years Cooper is back and Lil will have to decide whether she wants to give him another chance. Lil never understand why Cooper insisted that she pursue her dreams too; she saw this as a rejection of her love. And Cooper still loves Lil but he knows she has moved on so although he would love to have her back in his life as more, just being friends would be enough -- if she'll even offer him that. Then someone starts targeting Lil and her wildlife refuge and all bets are off. Cooper is still a cop at heart and he will do everything in his power to keep Lil and her lifelong dream of this animal refuge safe from harm.

I have been a long time fan of Nora Robert's work. I think she is one of the best story tellers in the business. That doesn't mean all of her books have been my favorites or that I liked all the subject matters she has tackled. But this book is one of the best ones I can remember reading by any author! If you have never experienced a Nora Robert's book Black Hills would be an excellent one to start with. If you are a long time fan of Nora's work, run, don't walk, to the nearest place you buy your books and pick up this one; this is a story you will not want to miss.
