| Emma and Jack have been the best of friends since first grade. Thirty years later, she's a successful nightclub owner and he's the head of a security company that caters to the stars. Their friendship is unbreakable. When the two leads of Emma's show both come down sick, Jack steps in to help Emma keep the show going. The erotic content of the show has them both discovering things about each other that neither would have guessed. It jumpstarts their relationship, but it takes some time and creative communication methods for them both to reveal their deepest sexual fantasies to one another.
In Black Jack, Carr weaves fantasy and reality together in brilliant and unexpected ways. The pirate fantasy they acted out in the beginning is used both literally and metaphorically to show the progression of Emma and Jack's relationship. It's a fresh and refreshing approach to deepening the plot of a novella. The reader benefits from a deep exploration of the characters in a short amount of time. I applaud Ms. Carr for her literary genius. Once again, she rises to the top and manages to stand out among all the other erotic romances out there. The eroticism of Emma and Jack's relationship is apparent in every interaction, no matter how innocent. Every single sex scene serves to titillate the reader, further the development of the plot, and help us to know our hero and heroine. Carr writes scenes with grit and grace, maintain a delicate balance that appeals to every side of BDSM. I love how she is able to show the loving, sensual side of BDSM as well as the hedonistic side we all know and love. Kudos to Carr for another crown jewel.
