| In this second novel in the Black Wind Saga, Bronwyn McGregor is now a doctor and newly employed at a maximum security hospital for the criminally insane in Iowa. Bronwyn's mother and fiancé are both employed at the facility, as is Dr. Brian O'Shea, her late lover Sean's father. Shortly after arrival, she meets the Chief of Security, Viraiden Cree, who is a Reaper. She has been drawn to no other but Sean, but this strange creature holds her attention, and he seems to be watching her. Viraiden is a Prime Reaper with the Queen Parasite inside of him, but he occupies Sean's body, with Sean's heart and memories of Bronwyn intact. The Nightwind Danyon has placed the elderly Cedric as a watchdog on her as he still hopes to have her one day. He has set the Bugol Noz to watch Cree. To add to the confusion, an Amazeen whose family once owned the original Cree has come to Earth to collect her property. Somehow, Bronwyn and Viraiden fall in love, but the Nightwind and Amazeen will do anything in their power to keep the two apart.
If anything, this novel is better than the first. Viraiden is a much stronger character, as is the grown up Bronwyn. The Nightwind Danyon has become even more obsessed with Bronwyn, but still thinks that he is cleverer than anyone else. The Bugol Noz is a very sympathetic character, as is the aged Nightwind, Cedric. The setting in a maximum-security mental institution is perfect for these characters. The story is full of action and there doesn't seem to be a lull here anywhere. I really enjoyed this one.
