Kathryn McAllister has returned to the small town of Elba, North Carolina, after four years in prison. Her conviction for the murder of her husband Michael has been overturned on new evidence, but the townsfolk don't buy it. They are hostile and even dangerous.

Kat wants to find the person responsible for the bloody death. Police chief Nick DiSalvo takes an interest in Kathryn's case -- and in Kathryn. Nick was on a New York SWAT team until his partner was killed. He has an ex-wife who resented his long work hours. His 13-year-old daughter Janine both complicates and enriches his life. He came to Elba for the quiet life.

Kathryn is nearly run down by a car, has her home ransacked, and finds a five foot rattler on her doorstep. This only strengthens her resolve to find the truth.

Wanita Crumley, a shady lady who helped convict Kathryn, is murdered. And a decades old secret comes to light.

The mystery is well-plotted and compelling. Author Breton sprinkles clues in nicely and the solution is logical and satisfying to the reader.

Kathryn is feisty and completely believable. Nick is likable, sometimes infuriating, and totally male. The rednecks and Southern Belles of Elba are a delight to hate. This is a truly enjoyable tale.
