| Known as the superhero Surf, Jo Tanis has spent the last few years as an unwilling puppet of the Agency. She has participated in choreographed fights using her ability to manipulate the electromagnetic energy around her. Now she has to face the ultimate test of her abilities against aliens who have come to fight the supers, who have no idea how to handle this very real threat. With the top supers being beaten by the aliens, Jo has to gather together any remaining supers, including the mysterious Hunter, and figure out a way for them to work together to defeat the aliens.
The story will draw you in from the very beginning with the action starting in the very first line. Jo is thrust into the forefront of the fight but escapes to regroup when things start to go wrong. Her conflict about retreating to fight another day really highlights her personality and makes it easy for readers to understand her determination to do the right thing and find a way to defeat the aliens. That determination allows her to work together with any supers, including supervillains, who answer her call for help. All of her actions illustrate how important it is to her that she do the right thing and how strong her character is. This is a really interesting, fun story to read. However, I had some problems following the story when the timeline would shift from the present to the past without any kind of indication that a shift was coming. There were many times I found myself confused by a paragraph or two until I realized that the timeline had shifted. Had there been something to indicate the shifts from present to past and then back, I think I would’ve enjoyed the story more because there would have been less confusion. The timeline shifting aside, though, I really did like the story, especially the characters.
