| I enjoyed this book so much. It was set in Edinburgh, Scotland in the 1850s. Lord Gregory Fielding and three of his co-workers were travelling from London to Edinburgh to interview a man who survived the Crimean War. While in route, they were attacked. One man disappeared completely, one was killed, and Lord Calvin Drake, Lord Gregg’s best friend, was badly wounded. Lord Gregg was shot in the head and was temporarily (they prayed) blinded. The survivors were transported to an Abbey in the area and nursed back to health by a doctor and the nuns.
Madeline O’Neil was horrified when she recognized the blinded Lord Gregory. It had been three years since she last saw him but she had never forgotten him or forgiven herself. Their baby that he didn’t know about was buried close to the Abbey and Maddie had been living with the nuns for almost three years. She prayed Lord Gregory wouldn’t recognize her until she convinced him to forgive her for hurting him and the others involved in her scheme. Ms. Phyllis Campbell did a great job of writing this book and keeping this fast-paced story moving at the speed which defied monotony. She created her main characters so that there were multiple levels to their personalities. This just made the couple more than fascinating. The supporting cast members were believable and the plot was so remarkable that it was almost impossible to put it down. The sensuality between the couple was incredible. Campbell definitely knows how to put the sizzle in a relationship. The tension written into the script just showed her ability to capture her readers. The myriad of poignant scenes captivated me and I’m so glad to have read this story. The surprises were non-stop. I loved this book and highly recommend it to others.
