Atra was summoned by Queen Anca, The Protector of Corsova to do a job. Anca needed the special skills known only to the Makheet people to find an escaped prisoner. But not just any prisoner, Anca's own half sister Nikia Draganescu, the illegitimate daughter of Valdemeer Draganescu. Two years prior, Nikia had tried to take the Blood Oath so she could be Queen. Nikia claimed herself the rightful heir. Instead, she almost died and fell into a coma. Now Nikia was awake and had escaped her prison. Anca believed that Nikia would come for her and take the throne.

Atra wasn't happy about this. His people preferred solitude to being around others. Reluctantly, Atra agrees to go after Nikia. He had heard all about the evil deeds committed by Nikia and Queen Anca was right. Nikia had to be stopped before she exposed to the world that Vampire's really do exist.

Nikia woke from her coma and for the first time in her life, she had control of her own mind. Nikia's first free thought was to grieve for her nephew and all the others that had died. Illiana's spirit had controlled Nikia's mind and body since birth. Illiana had forced Nikia into doing revolting acts. But no one would believe that Nikia herself was innocent. Anca, her sister, didn't realize the power Illiana had. She had gained vast knowledge from Elsa, her mother. Illiana's family are Witches, and very powerful ones at that. Nikia decided to go to her mother's people and hoped they knew a way to rid her mind of Illiana forever. But she had to get there first.

When Atra found Nikia the first thing he noticed was her aura was one of an innocent. How could this be? Atra knew the things Nikia had done, but Atra also sensed a blackness deep inside her. Just who is Nikia? Atra felt strange things from this woman, things that are not normal for his people. Atra thinks Nikia maybe insane, surly Anca would not execute a crazy woman? But what if she's telling the truth? Would Anca give Nikia the chance to prove her story? Atra decides the best thing for him was to stay away from Nikia; she was dangerous in more ways than one.

Atra and Nikia's love story is very touching. Atra is an alpha male from a tribe that devotes themselves to solitude. Yet when he thinks of Nikia, all of a sudden, Atra's solitary life feels empty. Nikia fights hard for her right to live. Her feelings for Atra are a mixed blessing, she never thought to experience. What will happen to our couple? This story has several elements involved, with all of them coming together just right. There is lots of action as our couple is kept on the run, with a lot of discoveries made along the way. Kit Tunstall's book packs a powerful story that you can't put down. I enjoyed every minute of reading. Be sure to get a copy soon and see who you'll root for in the end. Enjoy!
